Jared's Development @9yr old

Jared turned 9 .although I like to emphasize to him that he’s like a 10 yr old to me. So a 10yr old should not be naked in the living room, trying to get change..but he still does that. He is still very much in love with his choot choot, and need to hv a dose almost every weekday afternoon. *GOSH*

 Social skill
He has overcome his social problem of being a loner in P1&P2, now grown to having quite a no. of friends to play za4 or the finger games with him. He had also promoted him self to be the za4 master and to have enough time to play, his lunch boxes need to be in bite size, so that he can eat them while playing.
 Since he had decided he is going for GEP school, I asked him if he is going to miss anybody. He said Tong Cheng. But Eaton will miss him most, to the extend that he asked Jared to write to him on June/Dec holiday.. that’s a great achievement on social skill!

 Academic
Academically he is the bright student in front of teachers, Mrs Tang his P3 english teacher has mentioned that his English command is excellent. I had been spending a lot of times, almost everyday to work on his Chinese Compo, memorizing good sentence, Chinese oral. Luckily this the only subject I need to drill him on so far. Occasionally he will get to do some math & science paper/assessment book. Chinese Paper2 is always left till 3-4wks before exam.

 Weight
29.5kg most time, this had to be the year he had the most weight increase. About 4kg! He is seriously running out of pants to wear.

 Violin
Working on his grade5 songs, and the dreadful violin lesson for the past years, is now a relaxing time to get away from me..hah

 Tooth
3 tooth has drop, 2 permanent tooth, in upper front row. Finally, 1 wobbly tooth on the bottom row

 Birthday wish
 This is quite weird, he actually asked not to go for staycation like what Kaylen had at Legoland hotel & waterpark. He asked for a peaceful time, with delicacy for dinner.

P3 Compo

This is Jared's 1st ever compo that got selected as model compo to be distributed to the class.

He is very strong in the good vocabs, but still weak to bring the content to climax..Then again, he did learnt a lot from TLL.  This compo he got 15/20. Good job Jared!

T2(C1)

“Hooray! We are going to the Sensory Park!” I exclaimed.

            After we reached the beautiful park, I ran to admire the orchids. The buzzing of bees and the smell of flowers relaxed me. The orchids were beautiful! However, I was not aware of the incident that would await me.

            Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a boy with a mischievous looking face. He cast furtive glances around. Then, he tugged at a unique and rare orchid. Sensing that something was amiss, I secretly watched him.

            To my horror, the boy plucked the orchid off its stem! He slipped it into his pocket and nonchalantly walked off. I was appalled by his behavior. I decided to inform the gardener who was watering the orchids nearby about the boy’s inappropriate act.

            The gardener marched up to the boy. He reprimanded him sternly and called his mother. They had to pay for the flower.  The boy looked at the floor remorsefully and vowed not to do that again. As I continued to admire the beautiful orchids, I was glad that the boy had learnt his lesson.

The invitation worth waiting for...

It's the party I've been looking forward to...

YES! Its another rewarding year! Even though most likely he would be no. 3 ...but at least he made it..with all the hardworks, scolding...and effort that we've put in..

The P2 Exam Ordeal is finally over

Not very good..especially chinese..even though I've put in additional efforts on it...
But I'm really happy with English compo, have not seen the work yet.
So from now onwards the focus will have to be on Chinese compo..

Finally the 2nd front tooth dropped

This is the 2nd tooth Jared dropped..much slower than most kids...at 1mth to 8yrs..He only dropped 2 tooth. And the last 1 was a yr ago..It had so much decay on it..and just refused to come out..This tooth become so wobbly only because he hit on something..and he asked to be pulled out..So daddy gave him some help!

The other tooth after empy for 1 whole year... growing at a rapid speed now!

Meet The Parents P2 for Jared

We arrived like 40mins earlier for the appointment so that we can rushed off for the skating lesson.

Met up with Mr Kok and Mdm Chionh.

So the first thing I asked was how was Jared’s academic? Any drop as I observed his conduct was from Excellent to Very good.

Mr Kok mentioned he is still doing very well, and pretty sure he is still in top 3…This year excellent conduct is given to more all rounded kids (instead of top 3).

As Jared was more passive, so he can only get very good..its 3/6 only for his conduct.

Anyway, to us, its really difficult to change the his introvert behavior as he really takes after both me and his daddy. So I cannot ask for more.

Since I have this impression of excellent for top 3, when he got back his report book on 31-May, I had been scolding him real badly for not being top 3…though this is the case, he already got a helicopter as a reward for working hard…and I already promised a skating gears and lesson…

When I found out from Mr Kok..all these became a reward he deserved. Heh.

We also asked on Friends issue…I told Mr Kok, I’m aware that he has more friends this yr, although not a lot…and Mr Kok. Shake his head telling me that..actually he is still the same can’t be bother to make friends. His current friend are those rejected by the rest of the class, and because Jared is so nice that he won’t reject anyone that comes to him…So they take refuge in him.

Again, Mr Kok say he expected this type of behavior for “genious” kids..Not good in everything especially social skills. But he is definitely not genious..it take a lot of hardwork on our part to make sure he can do his papers well.

Sometimes he would also cry in class when he did not get things right in group work, and refused to join the rest of activities.

As for Mdm Chionh…she said Jared is very quiet in class..seldom talk..but he know what was going on. Only on 1 particular lesson when they talked about Jordan, some stone city outside the classroom thing..that he became suddenly interested and put up his hand very often in the class.

For this we also aware, it seemed TLL syllabus is really provoking and raising his interest, that he shared a lot during classes instead of school work.

There will be no Chinese compo writing for the whole of P2..and will only start in P3.

Inline skating...signed up!

We have signed up for 4 lesson for Jared..but have intention to sign up another 4..since 4 lesson its only guaranteed for rink...and with 8 lesson, it is guaranteed from Fort Road to MacD.

This is a make up lesson specially arranged, we got the gears from Coach Edward too...$170 in total for gears..and $150 for 4 lesson course fee..

It's my reward to him for maintaining top 3 in class!..hehe..


Today is the 3rd time he skate, we practise on our own...when his daddy was fixing up the helmet..for the 1st time Jared became impatient...and scold his daddy he is waiting time...and asked him to faster...He has improved quite a bit...and getting more confident..


Now..he got much confident.  What coach said was so true, every 5 min on wheels, you will realised you are better than the last 5min.

Jared’s Update 7yr 6mth

24-May-2013: Received his first ever call from friend!

Why am I so excited about it?

He is the loner in school…so naturally do not have any or many friend.

But this yr he has improved quite a bit…occasionally he will get demerits from talking to friends.

The  friend, Lucas, called on my hp while we were on the way to Sentosa. He said, Hi, I’m Jared’s friend. Can I talk to him?

Conversation about new baby

I casually asked the kids

Me: Hey, you all want a new meimei or didi?

Kaylen: Yes, I want I want…I want pls

Jared: Don’t want..I don’t even want this meimei..

Recently this boy has been complaining over me don’t really love him..and as a result he also don’t really love me. He get all kind of grumbles when he needed to write love poem for me for mothers day..hehe

It has to do with my strict schedule to work on his studies..

That’s why some parents rather spend the $ on tuition than tense up the relationship.

Not very good..kinda worry if can’t get into top 3..and as expected, my nagging prolongs..hehe…

Officially toothless -Jared 7yr 3 wks

13-Dec 2012 Thursday

I had finally booked an appoinment with the school at 2.30pm today for him to go for the extraction of his front tooth..as it's FREE!...this is the biggest advantage going to primary school.

He's 1st filling cost almost 200..and subsequent 5-7 fillings almost cost 500-600...as he had early decay from 2.5yr old. As I was being kiasu, so I brought him to fix it as young as 3yr old...and Guess what? He is the last in class who maintain baby tooth even though with lotsa of decays..

Finally its 1 tooth out.but his mood wasn't very good...refused to do anything..and don't dare to laugh or talk freely..hehe.

So I wasn't able to take a pic of his toothless pic yet. hehe




Edited 15-Dec Sat..finally managed to captured the bogeh look. The tooth which was extracted has severe decay..in fact there's still a few more with severe decay which still intact.

Preparing Jared for P1

So daddy say Jared don't need tuition now, we shall do the teaching ourselves..while col's kids go to learning lab which is said to teach 1yr advance of stuff..but it's so ex..2 subject per term is 500+..more ex than his daily sch..so big no no.

We started K2 stuff last Aug/Sept..and completed the Jumbo book early this year..and since then I started him on the 3 books for P1 in particular.

I find them very useful as in I get to learn how to teach him as well...like maths, number bonds..which is something new.

He's weakest part must be writing sentence on his own..cos he can't spell most of the words he need to use..and him being so lazy I can't do much with him in the evening..

We'll see how he goes..

On the 21-Apr..we officially completed the 100hrs PV for Pei Chun + Hong Wen..phew..it was so stressful being on leave half day each person per wk..till our bosses commented lost count.hah..

I'm sooo proud of him...I did not expect he just need such a short time to be able to get a hang of it riding in 2 wheels..cos he very scared of falling..I didn't expect he dare to do it (since he won't even sit on a swing)..

Jared's abacus

I did this row with him last night..I realised these sum need to take some time in my mind for computation..and he might be faster if he were to use his "fingers", not really xing1 suan4...and not hand gesture of playing abacus..he learnt the method to calculate with fingers..

Jared 5yr 2 mth
Milk
Since Jan 2011, when K2 started..he has started to feel embarrassed drinking milk from milk bottle..during awake times.
So he would asked milk to be made in a cup for him to drink before sleep, most time when he is not grouchy.

Reading
We have been really lazy during the 2010 dec sch holidays, hope we will be able to catch up from Jan onwards.

We are now at P&J 9A and 9B. Skipped 7b half way, 8a and 8b..cos it was getting too simple, and reading without challenge anymore.

But we hardly have time for other books..which we really need to try harder to find times.

Chinese Reading
My order from dang dang.com si wu kwai du finally arrived. Ordered on 4Nov, finally arrived on 24 Dec.
He used 1 wk on book 1..now he’s at book 2. But the way he read the Chinese is like reading English ascent..heh.

Violin
During the last lesson of 2010, he was scolded very bad but Prof Thanf when he played allegro..and he re-tape the violin for him. Since then he has been able to play pretty well.
Now he just started on Perpetual Motion..struggling with memorizing the notes…he could play with reading the notes..but memorizing still need a while..

He did improve very very much compared to Jan2010,but may be slow compared to others..since he can’t put in 100% concentration.

Abacus
He’s now counting without abacus..using fingers..again his laziness really get nothing much done, during the abacus lesson..He would do only ~40sums and leave 200 over sum for homework..that is such a headache.

But he could do them pretty accurately and fast if he really wanted to do

No more no more…from Dec ’10 onwards..now no longer seen him doing it..such a big relieve.

Relationship with Kaylen
When they are very close they stay truly close to each other, play, talk, eat, everything together.
When they fight..they fight all the time.

But she is truly a great companion to him..i can see without her, he would get so bored, and so quiet..

Chinese Reading
Getting lazier and not much progress from then, but she definitely know a significant amount of Chinese words..compared to Jared who knew nothing at this age.

Writing
She can now following the tracing to write A, B
She followed koko habit on doing everytime…she would ask for a hug before and after she write an alphabet.

Talking
So so talkative and noisy all the time

Milk
Still drinking his milk from milk bottle, ~2x a day morning & before sleep for school days, and 1x for those day without sch.
He still don’t know how to have proper breakfast so early for sch.
I wonder if he will continue to drink milk up to P1? Just like me?? *faint* hehe.

Enrichment: Abacus
He’s at book 3 now. By next month when he start on Book 4, he will start to use mental to calculate the sums. But he is getting lazier these days, only complete <20sums during lesson, the rest of the time he sing songs in the class..*faint*

Just had his first group ensemble. We were so relieved with his performance, cos he had always didn’t want to go for it..I also pity him as he got no friend..unlike kindy concert, But he really enjoyed the concert , and while we were at hm, he told us I want to go to concert already…then at outside hall, again he said he want to go in already…Which is really positive sign.
Just started learning Suzuki book..He can now Gone with the Wind, Aunt Rody, O Come little Children, May song…and going to start practice Long Long ago.

After so long in violin, he can self play the items in keyboard..We got a small piece of keyboard (hand me down from me)…occasionally he would try to play the tunes..


English reading
Peter & Jane: Half way at 7b, and Half way at 9a.
Can spell abt 100 words now..but still cant write anything on his own.

Chinese reading
Still can’t read any Chinese book..oh dear..

Pee& poo
From baby he is troubled by poo poo problem..now still..most frequent goat poo poo..despite feeding him with lotsa of fruits and water. Another great achievement must be going pee by himself..Just so much relieved to us, heh..Poo most of time still doing it in potty.

Blinking eyes
This is the first and foremost habit he need to get rid of..and its my no. 1 birthday wish for him..

Teeth
Still all intact *lucky*…had he first decay at 2.5yr..first filling at 3yr old..And just completed major filling ($400 on 7 tooth) in june-july’10 4.5yr old…I got relieved when I observed some of his classmates already lost teeth, at least he wont be the 1st one to bo geh chiak tauge..hah. He has got a nick, Jared black teeth given by Robin..hehe..of cos now no more, and he’s fine to smile with teeth nowadays..Thats the most worth $ spent.

What's he up to now?

I remembered when he was 3 yr+ to 4 yr old, every month I'll be busy updating Kaylen's development..but I basically has got nothing to update on Jared...as we were too busy with the new born,..and Jared was doing nothing fantastic..

But right now, I just want to say..I am just so proud of Jared's development..though may not be superior compared to other kids..but he is definitely making lots of improvement.

1) Jumbo book
We have completed K1 Jumbo book and now we are working on K2 (English, math, science) book...Bravo to my boy..but we didn't complete the whole of K1 lah..especially those that he need to come out with sentence or own words.

He did very well in K2 book for reading comprehention, grammar and the maths..
Things to improve on is definitely spelling , and creative writing..
Take a look at the passage...he could read most of it without help, and answer the question
Words that he needed help: Passage , stairs
Its amazing for a hyper active 4yr old going to 5 able to do this in my opinion...well, at least compared to us last time M'sia standard..hehe..
I also got him the chinese K2 jumbo book, mum is working with him on it..but he has problem recognising chinese word without hanyu pinyin..

2) Peter & Jane 7A
We are at about middle of book. Looks like my goal to finish him all the way to level 12 before he turn 5 definitely not going to come through..But never mind..Lets try to finish till 9b...maybe he don't need to go further liao..cos I noticed he is now very good with reading even at this age..

3) Some others books
He read all these books to me..gosh again I'm so proud..be it the bedtime stories..or Mc queen story..(1 page)

4) Flash card reading & Spelling

These are the cards he could spell now..

Stack 2: 100 Keywords
When I received and started using these flashcard back in March’10, it was pretty too easy to flash it to him…as P&J is repeating these words again and again..I got a little heartache, but an1 wei4 myself that I still have Kaylen to flash to..hehe..
But now these cards came in handy …cos I’m working to make Jared spell all the words in it..cos these are the basic.

Stack 1+2+3
He could read 99% of the cards..only miss 1-3 cards sometimes..But we very scared if he asked to do cards reading..that means the whole floor will be full with cards…We started with 5 cards reading per day since Jan’10…and after a while he could read 50 of them…by the time he could read about 150 cards, together with peter & jane…the rest of 100 cards do not need me to go through one by one…He already knew how to read by himself..

I’m really hopping that’s how spelling will work out for him…though he still do it by memorizing..one fine day he will realize how to decode these words..

5) Violin

He just did his first public performance at home 19Sept 2010, Sun!..3 songs( twinkle, parsnip polka, little einstein) .to su4 su4(Uncle Kee Hung), uncle james, gu nei, teoh gong, the grands, aunty irene, me...*daddy hiding in room, scared pai seh eh* hehe
Though that's a home performance..I'm glad that he managed to perform quite confidently ..with minimal mistake..and if you know him, he is a scaredy cat..so doing things like that is really difficult..when everything ended..he came to hug me and say I love you mummy..
Boy, I'm so proud of you...and I hope you will continue to practise harder..and do well.

*too bad I didn't record down..cos pai seh mah, but his uncle Kee Hung did do a recording and guess what Jared commented?

He need to work on behaviour issue...

Update on Jared 4 yr 9mth

Abacus
Just yesterday 10Aug10, he heard teacher's comment from Shao qi's mum. Teacher advise Shao Qi to jia you and work hard to remember the formula, cos Xiang yi is v. v. good with formula...and if not she will be the last in class..

After Jared heard the comment, he got so happy...and start telling everybody he is no. 1..hehe He has also been promoted to little teacher in class, and helping some other children with the sums...and as a result, he will be given lotsa of sweets and biscuit at the end of class by the teacher...and he would complain, sooo tiring to teach other kids..hehe.
He is able to complete like 60-80sums in class now..and left remaining 40-60sums to be completed at remaining of the wk.


The formula sheet which they are supposed to memorise, surprisingly he knew it by heart, not necessary to memorise.

-> Currently we are at mid of 6b
-> Took us longest time like close to 1mth to complete 6a, as he could not finish 5 page every night now, due to so many words in each page and he don't take noon nap and causing him to be really tired at night

My current problem with him is
1) how to make him memorise the spelling and able to write out the words or sentence on his own. He has no problem with school spelling, but when it comes to memorise other words spelling, it seemed so difficult. The only sentence he can write now is
I love you daddy
I love you mummy
Actually he wanted to write I don't love you mummy, but don't seemed so difficult, so he gave up hehe.

2) Decoding new words
He has stop trying to decode new words for sometimes...previously he is very willing to try, but lately he just simply surrender.

Then again, I'm really really happy with his ability to read now...We've started going to library weekly...and just a while I ago, I managed to borrow 2 very good book. Roald dalh's The enormous crocodile, which I have to read to him and The tooth fairy, which he could read some page to me..(but mainly lazy)..

I hope this good habits will continue...but I'm really thinking time is too short now..

He playing little einstein..slower than other kids in ensemble, most likely wouldn't be able to catch up during lesson..but he did showed some improvement...after all he's the 2nd youngest in class..There's 1 more gal who's 4yr old..

p/s when I just collected P&J level 5 & 6..I was amazed by how many words in a page..and wonders when ever Jared can reach these pages..and hey, this is just the best books for kids to build up their confidence. Then again when it come to other books, there maybe a lot of new words(since P&J reused most words)...but his phobia of reading is now totally overcome!

Flash card reading
- We are now at 50words already..Yooohooo
Hmmm i bought the cards when he was only a few mths old, together with the words cards there still dots card. The dots card are completely wasteful cos I don't even know how to use them.
He is very slow when it come to reading..he got phobia himself. Good thing is now after some training, he has finally able to overcome the fears for flash cards..and its not that hard to get him to start reading the cards..or intro new cards.
But when it comes to reading books..he still say he cant all the time..

Maths
I like to do maths work book with him as it is easier to explain..and since he had some basics on abacus simple adding is not much a problem.

Writing
Nos are in general quite good, but sometimes still he might writie it slanted or the opposite way
For alphabets he is quite good with capital..but when it come to small letter there seemed so much trouble.
He could only write his name in capital letter.
We also realised he had problem writing in the 3 lines worksheet. So we had to go back to train all the alphabets again...faint!

Violin

the 1st 3 mth, he said he dunt want to practise at hm..so we let him be and do it during lesson only
after a while, I read that kids need to practise everyday..so since this Jan10..we started him on daily practise..
Still he is slower compared to other kids, and couldnt really concentrate in class..haiz.
But he can now picicato twinkle star, play The train and I'm a little monkey...Though not much consistensy..and Prof Thanh, always said not good..I can still see he is still improving just slow lor...
We just have to make him able to learn seriously during lesson and concentrate..then he will be able to progress faster. He played at hm much better than in school.

In the noon time, he will learn bi3 hua4 chinese from waipo..and write / read a few chinese words lor.

Interesting Conversation with Jared @ 4yr 2mth

Jared: I'm not scared of mummy angry,but I'm scared of daddy angry...I'm a poor boy
Me: What happen daddy? What did you do to him?!

This boy is getting such a handful nowadays..he likes to bring his loud mouth everywhere, lazy, and tired & sleepy immediately when do school work times.

The moment you say finish studying, his eyes would be brighten up and jumping around everywhere..no longer sleepy.

He had the best holiday ever for the Dec09 holiday..we were busy shopping, ah yi's wedding, the japan trip..and more shopping..finally he did not learn anything during the hol.

Luckily we are back in tune ever since the school started, we got him to start writing again...(no choice, this boy had forgotten all the alphabets!), some colouring, or tracing..all back to square..haiz..

This yr, school has also started to let them bring homework every fri. Jared is never eager to get them done..so we have to balance between outdoors trip vs homework..quite sian..but that's life hehe!
